2007 Letter
Letter to ISSS 2007 Participants

1 July 2007

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The beautiful Scottish Highlands remain fresh in our memories, and positive thoughts and actions from the recent 17th ISSS Congress and of Winter Sports safety research are now our charge moving forward.

Our sincere thanks go to Dr. Mike Langran and his incredible team for organizing the conference and all social outings. The facilities were excellent for scientific exchange and social interaction. We also want to thank the sponsors of the meeting, and the mayor of Aviemore, Ian Malcolm, who joined us for several occasions. Even with no snow, we enjoyed many social activities including the Highland Games - Dr. Senner's shoulder will recover eventually, we hope! The closing banquet was a feast for all.

The 18th ISSS Congress in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, hosted by Professor Veit Senner, is now officially set for 26 April-2 May 2009. Please look for information at www.isssweb.com or directly at www.isss2009.com in the coming months.

I am pleased to announce that Arne Ekeland, MD, PhD, was elected as elected as an Honorary Member of the Society. Martin Mössner, PhD, from the Department of Sports Science, University of Innsbruck, Austria was presented the Sachiko Yahashi Memorial Award and the US$1000 prize for his outstanding presentation "Computer Simulation of a Combination of Carved Turns". The Scientific Committee would like to congatulate all of the speakers, and the students and young presenters in particular, for the quality of their presentations and for making the special effort to join the Congress.

We continued and expanded our discussions of several critically important topics related to Winter Sports safety - and in particular knee injuries in Alpine skiing, wrist injuries in snowboarding, head injuries, and issues surrounding terrain parks and their design, among others. Action items and plans for research and information dissemination were formulated. A decision was taken to make the web-based forums into a list-serve that would be available to ISSS members. Implementation of this is currently in progress. Many other positive discussions and suggestions will be implemented on the website to improve and maintain a high level of international communication and collaboration.

I believe that the Aviemore Congress was a big success in so many ways, and continues the energy and vibrancy that the founders of the Society envisioned. Old friendships were as always renewed, and new friendships were made. This is the heart and spirit of the ISSS family. I look forward to hearing from you all - please send any comments and suggestions along.

May the coming months be filled with snow or thoughts of the next winter which is soon to come.

Best regards

Rick Greenwald

President, ISSS
